Explore milestones in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s (SNF) more than quarter century of grantmaking.

SNF’s mission is broad by design, and the grants we’ve made since 1996 reflect this breadth. Grant projects have taken place on six continents—and in the seas between. They have spanned young and old, remote villages to big cities, alpha to omega (literally, in Greek language tools). They have ranged in size from a few thousand euros to a billion-dollar-plus initiative, but we know that dollar value and human value are two different things entirely. The thousands of grants SNF has made reflect the diversity of the people they serve but are all united by a common goal: empowering humanity. Explore a sampling in the timeline below.

2019

June

A discussion beyond labels, Greece

[Untitled], the title of the SNF Conference at this year’s Summer Nostos Festival, sought to look beyond traditional fields of expertise to explore multidimensional solutions to the biggest problems facing humanity.

SNF-DR River Campus inaugurated at The Rockefeller University, United States

Transforming and significantly expanding Rockefeller’s New York City campus, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation-David Rockefeller (SNF-DR) River Campus is designed to promote collaboration between researchers and equip them with state-of-the-art labs.

An exit path from the street, Senegal

A grant to Samu Social Senegal supports the provision of child-centric medical care, psychological assistance, and shelter for children living on the street in Dakar.

Alzheimer’s and quality of life, United States

A grant to CaringKind supports expanded educational opportunities and resources for families in the Bronx who are caring for relatives with Alzheimer’s disease.

Arts in prison, United States

Rehabilitation Through the Arts, which offers arts programming to people incarcerated at in New York State prisons, receives grant support.

2018

December

Inviting new audiences to the opera, Greece

Now that the Greek National Opera is settled in its new home at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, a multi-year grant supports its efforts to reach new audiences, as well as productions marking the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

October

iMEdD is established, Greece

SNF-affiliated nonprofit iMEdD (incubator for Media Education and Development) is established to promote transparency, credibility, independence, and excellence in journalism, in Greece and abroad

Securing a future for Hellenic studies, United Kingdom

Continuing its support for hubs of Hellenic studies at academic institutions, SNF endows professorial positions in Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature as well as Byzantine Archaeology and Visual Culture at the University of Oxford.

Discover Your City With Culture Pass

Free access to cultural venues, United States

The Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Library launch the Culture Pass initiative, which offers free access to cultural institutions across New York City, from museums to zoos, to library cardholders.

The biggest SNFestival yet, Greece

This year’s Summer Nostos Festival is bigger than ever, spanning eight days packed with music, athletic events, art, and activities for all ages at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. The SNF Conference, though on the theme of “disruption,” fits right in with this heady celebration.

Digital heritage preservation, France

A grant supports Age-Old cities: A virtual journey from Palmyra to Mosul, an exhibition at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris which uses digital technology to give life to important sites in the Arab world that have been destroyed or are under threat.

Scholarships for academic enrichment, Greece

The permanent endowment of the existing SNF Scholars Program at the American College of Greece will allow 50 students from all financial backgrounds to complete a minor at the school each year in parallel with their studies at a Greek public university.

Vamvakou Revival is established, Greece

A group of young friends spearheaded an effort to bring new life and new residents to the shrinking Greek mountain village of Vamvakou—where SNF’s founder had his roots—leading to the creation of the SNF-affiliated nonprofit Vamvakou Revival, which the Foundation supported as part of our broader initiative for the Greek region of Laconia.

February

Young journalists investigate, United States

The first long-form multimedia reporting piece by students participating in the SNF-supported Center for Strategic and International Studies Journalism Bootcamp is published. Created by students from Syracuse University, it focuses on the Rohingya crisis.

Co-President awarded Grand Cross, Greece

SNF Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Honor by the President of the Hellenic Republic in recognition of his contributions to Greece and philanthropy worldwide.

Fighting childhood cancer, Spain

A grant to Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children’s Hospital supports the creation of an integrated Pediatric Cancer Centre which will bring together health care and research services to improve outcomes for children facing cancer.

Local input in developing essential drugs, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Guinea

A grant supports DNDi’s (Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative) campaign to provide access to safe, effective medications to treat sleeping sickness developed in collaboration with local partners.

2017

November.

SNF launches the Dialogues series, Greece

The SNF Dialogues events offer a public platform for open, candid discussion on timely issues of general interest.

October

Conservation-minded development, Greece

An SNF-supported initiative from the Society for the Protection of Prespa seeks to foster environmental and cultural preservation alongside sustainable development in the sparsely-populated area in far Northern Greece known for its natural beauty.

September

SNF Health Initiative established, Greece

Driven by a conviction that quality health care should be acceptable to all, the Health Initiative includes the construction of three new hospitals in Greece, training programs for healthcare professionals, the procurement of equipment to empower them in delivering care, mental health resources for young people, and much more.

A grant supports the transformation of an underutilized basement space at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens into a public exhibition of a significant collection of religious and historical relics.

Cultural professionals fight discrimination, Italy

A grant supports Art Clicks, a project that aims to help develop best practices for fighting discrimination and promoting diversity in cultural institutions in Italy from MAXXI, a national museum of 21st-century art in Rome.

SNFestival at the SNFCC, Greece

2017 marks the first year the Summer Nostos Festival takes place at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. It includes the 6th SNF Conference on Philanthropy, which focus on the importance of creativity and public spaces.

August

Artist fellowship launches, Greece

The ARTWORKS SNF Artist Fellowship Program is established to create opportunities for early-career Greek artists.

May

A national Holocaust museum, Greece

A grant supports the development of the Holocaust Museum of Greece in Thessaloniki to pay tribute to the memory of the Greek Jews killed during World War II, to share the histories of vibrant Jewish communities in Greece before the war, and to fight against intolerance and antisemitism.

Expanding the National Gallery, Greece

A grant supports the expansion and renovation of the National Gallery - Alexandros Soutzos Museum in Athens, more than doubling the space available to the museum.

Mothers as peer health educators, Malawi

A grant supports mothers2mothers Mentor Mothers program in Malawi in offering health and education services aiming to eliminate "mother to child" transmission of HIV and promote reproductive, maternal, newborn child, and family health.

SNF delivers the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center to the public, Greece

Athenians and visitors from around the world immediately began to make the Renzo Piano-designed SNFCC their own, fulfilling the vision that motivated its creation.

January

New ambulances nationwide, Greece

A grant covers the procurement and maintenance for eight years of 143 state-of-the-art ambulances for use all across Greece, representing nearly a quarter of the National Center for Emergency Care’s total fleet. Digital upgrades to its operations center help ensure that they are dispatched effectively.

During his last international trip in office, President Barack Obama takes the stage in Stavros Niarchos Hall at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens to speak about democracy, citizenship, and the Greek concept of “philotimo.”

Refugee relief, Greece

Amid Greece’s refugee crisis, a grant supports the International Rescue Committee in providing emergency relief for refugees there.

Specialized mother-child care, Mali

A grant to SHARE supports the creation of a catheterization lab dedicated to heart exams and surgery at the Le Luxembourg Maternal and Child Care Hospital in Bamako.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center opens its doors, Greece

The “triple project” combines new homes for the Greek National Opera and National Library of Greece with one of the largest public green spaces in Athens and activities for all.

SNF Co-President becomes Officer of the Legion of Honor, France

At a ceremony at the French Embassy in Athens, SNF Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos is awarded the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor of the Republic of France for his and SNF’s philanthropic contributions in France and around the world.

Center for Talented Youth, Greece

The SNF Endowed Scholarship Fund is established at CTY Greece, a nonprofit academic center at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, to provide educational extracurricular programs to students, regardless of financial circumstance, through a collaboration with Johns Hopkins University.

Fifth SNF Conference, Greece

In its fifth edition, the Annual SNF International Conference on Philanthropy traveled outside Athens for the first time, to Thessaloniki, to examine the diverse and ongoing geopolitical challenges facing Southeastern Europe.

SNF commits $150 million to establish the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins, United States

Fostering civic engagement and civil discourse, especially among students, remains a key focus of SNF’s grantmaking through programs at universities like Penn and Delaware, as well as other nonprofits.

A grant supports the renovation of the Patrick and Joan Leigh Fermor House in Kardamyli so that it can serve as a center of educational activity under the auspices of the Benaki Museum.

October

Safer anesthesia, India

Lifebox's safe anesthesia methodology leads to better patient outcomes, and an SNF grant helps it expand to India to improve the safety and quality of surgical procedures in remote areas of the country, including with including specially designed pulse oximeters.

A grant to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam supports Get to Know Vincent, a multilingual online educational platform for primary and secondary students.

Building nonprofit-sector capacity, Greece

HIGGS (Higher Incubator Giving Growth & Sustainability), an initiative which aims to strengthen the capacity of nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations in Greece, is established with support from SNF.

The first iteration of what would become SNF Nostos, a summer celebration of big ideas, active fun, and the joy of being together, welcomes people of all interests in Athens.

Fourth SNF Conference, Greece

The fourth Annual SNF International Conference on Philanthropy in Athens addresses the topic of philanthropy and sustainability, in both the financial and ecological senses.

SNF announces another €100 million in relief for the Greek socioeconomic crisis

To combat the significant lingering effects of the financial crisis in Greece, SNF doubles the magnitude of its response with a second round of grants to nonprofits.

Capturing oral histories creates jobs, Greece

Istorima, created with a founding grant from SNF, has dual aims: recording and archiving over 50,000 oral histories from across Greece archive while offering short-term employment to the hundreds of young people around the country who record them.

Relief for urban centers, Greece

As part of a second round of support in SNF’s Grants Against the Greek Crisis initiative, major grants to the two largest municipalities in the country—Athens and Thessaloniki—help cover immediate needs for hard-hit local communities.
