These stories, told by Greek filmmakers, are featured in the lineup of the inaugural Baltimore Greek Film Festival. Between November 2 and 4, the event, a project of the Maryland Film Festival, will bring a selection of notable recent works to the screen of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway Theatre. The program aims to indicate the breadth and vibrancy of contemporary Greek cinema, including works spanning genres from black comedy to social drama produced from 2016 to 2018.
The venue, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway Theatre, lives up to the moniker of “movie palace”. Built in 1915 to host vaudeville shows, the theater fell into neglect before being restored and reopened in 2017. The building’s revitalization took place through a collaboration between Johns Hopkins University, the Maryland Film Festival, and the Maryland Institute College of Art and was supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), among others. SNF also provides support for Maryland Film Festival series.
